PITTSBURGH (AP) – A judge has dismissed all charges against a sex offender accused of offering a 12-year-old boy candy at Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Science Center.
Sherwood Stevenson’s lawyer says evidence prosecutors presented at a preliminary hearing Wednesday didn’t support the charges against the 76-year-old Clinton resident.
Police charged Stevenson with unlawful contact with a minor and other offenses after they say he sneaked into the science center Feb. 4, followed the boy’s gifted class and sat between him and a teacher in the center’s planetarium.
They say Stevenson pretended to be the boy’s grandfather when a teacher confronted him.
Stevenson pleaded guilty in 2011 to charges he fondling a 6-year-old boy on a Florida cruise.
Police say he hadn’t updated his Megan’s Law registration and skipped court-ordered treatment sessions.
