BRADFORD, Pa. (AP) — A water main break that has virtually cut off water to the northwestern Pennsylvania city of Bradford has prompted school and business closures — and officials say the problems will not be going away soon.

Reports that city officials say the break in the 24-inch line at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford caused 5 million gallons of water to leak through Monday afternoon and night.

A water authority official says the water system is dry until the main can be repaired and the reservoirs replenished.

Public schools and the local university canceled classes for the rest of the week. Some businesses also announced plans to close.

Mayor Tom Riel said the city has declared a state of emergency to begin applying for federal aid.
