Cal women upset; W&J’s Bellhy gets 1,000 for career

Nettie Blake scored six of her 18 points in overtime as Gannon upset 18th-ranked California 69-63 Saturday afternoon in a PSAC West Division women’s basketball game at the Convocation Center.

The loss snapped Cal’s eight-game winning streak and knocked the Vulcans into second place in the division, one game behind leader IUP (19-2, 23-2). The Vulcans close the regular season Wednesday at seventh-place Slippery Rock. IUP plays the same night at home against last-place Clarion.

Gannon is in third-place at 17-4, 19-6. The Golden Knights swept the season series from Cal.

Cal erased a nine-point deficit in the final five minutes of regulation. The Vulcans took a 59-57 lead with 1:58 remaining on a basket by point guard Mikki Glenn, but Gannon forced overtime when Candice Hendricks made a basket with 39 seconds to play.

Gannon scored the first five points of OT, getting a basket by Blake and a three-pointer from Mollie Sebald. Cal pulled to within 64-63 with 2:47 left but did not score again.

Glenn led Cal with 18 points, but the only other player to score in double figures was reserve forward Sierra Barrett with 10.

Hendricks scored 16 points for Gannon.

Wash & Jeff 67, Bethany 60: Washington & Jefferson locked up the third seed in this week’s Presidents’ Athletic Conference tournament with a 67-60 victory over Bethany on Senior Day at Henry Memorial Center.

W&J (13-5, 19-6) earns a first-round bye before hosting the winner of Monday’s 6-7 matchup. The quarterfinal contest is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Against Bethany (8-10, 12-13), W&J held a 46-45 lead in the second half before putting together a 9-1 run. A pair of free throws by Taylor Cortazzo with 2:47 left gave W&J its largest lead of the game, 65-55.

Beka Bellhy led a balanced W&J attack with 16 points, bringing the former Fort Cherry standout’s career total to 1,000. She also had a team-leading seven rebounds.

Amirah Moore contributed 14 points off the bench, and Valerie Dunlap had 12 points and seven rebounds.

Kelsea Daugherty had game-highs of 20 points and 10 rebounds for Bethany.

Waynesburg 81, Chatham 58: Rebecca Kerr scored 17 of her 28 points in the first half and Waynesburg avenged an earlier loss to Chatham by rolling past the Cougars 81-58 in a PAC game at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

Waynesburg (12-6, 15-10) will take a five-game winning streak into this week’s PAC tournament. The Yellow Jackets will be the No. 4 seed and Wednesday night will host the winner of the opening round game between Grove City and Thiel.

Against Chatham (3-15, 6-19), Waynesburg was tied 8-8 before putting together a 42-14 run that extended into the second half. Kerr, who was 11-for-11 at the free-throw line in the game, scored 17 points during the run. Kerr was one of three Yellow Jackets with eight rebounds.

Freshman Addy Knetzer scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds off the bench for Waynesburg, and Hayden Giuliani had 10 points.

Emily Schmidt, a Ringgold graduate, paced Chatham, with 22 points.

Gannon 59, California 57, OT: Rich Austin made two free throws with five seconds left to give PSAC West Division leader Gannon a 59-57 overtime win against California at the Convocation Center.

Cal had forced overtime when point guard Khalil Jabbie made two free throws that tied the score at 53-53 with 56 seconds left in regulation. After a Gannon missed shot, Cal’s Arman Marks missed a shot from in close with two seconds remaining, which sent the game to overtime.

Marks, who scored 24 points, made a jump shot that tied the score against at 57-57 with 33 seconds remaining in the extra session. Austin gave Gannon the lead with his two free throws, and Jabbie missed a desperation three-pointer as time expired.

The loss dropped Cal’s record to 9-12 in the division and 14-13 overall. It was the 11th loss by nine points or less for the Vulcans, who had upset Gannon earlier in the season in Erie. Gannon improved to 17-4, 19-8.

Cal is battling Pitt-Johnstown and Edinboro for the final two spots from the West in the PSAC tournament.

Marks, who also had four assists, was the only Cal player to score in double figures. The Vulcans led by seven points early in the first half, but neither team held a lead of more than four points over the game’s final 34 minutes.

Adam Blazek led Gannon with 15 points, Raphell Thomas-Edwards had 14 and Girbran Smith 13.

Bethany 73, Wash & Jeff 50: The regular season came to a close for W&J with a 73-50 loss to visiting Bethany in a PAC contest.

Alan Harper made 10 of 16 shots and scored a career-high 24 points to lead Bethany (11-5, 16-9). Delonte Joyce followed with 17 points.

Guard Doug Johnson had a big game for W&J (1-15, 2-23) with 18 points that included four three-pointers. He was the only player to score in double figures for the Presidents, who committed 23 turnovers.

W&J will play at Westminster in the opening round of the PAC tournament Monday night. The Presidents and Titans split the regular-season series with W&J winning in new Wilmington last Wednesday.

Waynesburg gets No. 2 seed for PAC tournament: Waynesburg, which concluded its regular season Wednesday with a win over Geneva – the seventh consecutive victory for the Yellow Jackets – finished in second place in the PAC and will have the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. Waynesburg (16-9) was assured of the No. 2 spot when regular-season champion Saint Vincent defeated Thomas More 81-72 Saturday.

Waynesburg will host seventh-seed Grove City (4-12, 9-16) in the quarterfinals Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
