City man faces drug charge
A Washington man will be charged with possession of heroin after Washington County sheriff’s deputies found him with a brick of suspected heroin when they took him into custody Friday on an outstanding bench warrant.
Dezmick Matthews, 20, was found in a bedroom at a home on Crestwood Drive, Canton Township. A 17-year-old girl who was in the bedroom with him also faces charges.
Deputy Ron Catrain Jr. said the sheriff’s department was looking for Matthews on a bench warrant for failure to appear on felony drug charges when they got a tip he was at the residence. They also received information he might have a weapon.
Several deputies went to the residence. When the homeowner answered the door, deputies told him they had information Matthews was there. As deputies talked to him, they could heard the sound of someone running toward the back of the house.
The homeowner told the deputies Matthews was at the residence and he would go get him. Deputies then found Matthews and the girl in the bedroom.
Catrain said the heroin was found during a sweep of the bedroom. Police also found a stamp bag on Matthews.
Deputies also found what appeared to be a small-caliber, semiautomatic handgun that was actually a pellet gun with the orange safety tip removed.
The girl, who recently moved to the Washington area, had suspected paraphernalia as well as brass knuckles. She will be charged in a juvenile allegation with possession of paraphernalia and having a prohibited offensive weapon.
Matthews will be arraigned at a later date on a charge of possession of heroin before District Judge David Mark.
