West Greene Hall of Fame to add Sonneborn
Rick Sonneborn, a 1963 graduate of West Greene, will be inducted into the school’s hall of fame during a halftime ceremony tonight as the Pioneers’ boys basketball team faces Jefferson-Morgan.
Sonneborn, one of the most prolific basketball players in West Greene history, surpassed 1,000 poitns in just two seasons. He led the WPIAL and PIAA in scoring during the 1963 season, while setting the single-game Washington-Greene County scoring record with 56 points.
Sonneborn, an honorable mention All-American in 1963, attended Penn State on a full scholarship and led the freshman team in scoring. He was a member of the 1965 Nittany Lions team that made it to the NCAA Regional final.
After his playing career, Sonneborn was an assistant coach at Waynesburg College under Rudy Marisa and was the head boys basketball coach at West Greene from 1986-1993, coaching the program to its first winning season in 20 years and first playoff appearance.
