LOS ANGELES (AP) – Rick Orlov, the veteran Los Angeles Daily News reporter who covered City Hall for nearly three decades, has died.

The newspaper reports Orlov died Monday after suffering complications of diabetes. He was 66.

Mayor Eric Garcetti called Orlov the dean of the City Hall press corps, praising his tough but fair approach to reporting on local politics.

Orlov’s sister, Joanne Levy, said her brother always wanted to be a journalist. He earned a journalism degree at what is now California State University, Northridge, and was hired by the Daily News in 1978.

In 2011, Orlov received a lifetime achievement award from the Los Angeles Press Club.

He is survived by his sister, her husband, and nieces and nephews.

A public memorial is planned for Thursday.
