Brandon Lawless, a Carmichaels graduate, has enrolled at Waynesburg University for the spring semester and immediately joined the Yellow Jackets’ baseball team.
Only a freshman, Lawless spent the fall semester at Alderson Broaddus, but did not see any playing time on the football field. The move to Waynesburg is not a surprise since his former high school coach, Scott Van Sickle, took a job as an assistant coach for the Yellow Jackets’ baseball team.
Lawless will immediately bolster a talented pitching rotation that includes nine returners, only one senior and a strong freshman class, including Noah Lolley, a Trinity graduate. The hard-throwing righty tossed 67 1/3 innings last spring while striking out 90 and walking 30. He finished with a 9-2 record, including a complete-game victory in the first round of the PIAA Class A playoffs and made the O-R’s All-District as a first team selection.
Lawless will also join Waynesburg’s football team next fall and could have a chance to compete for the starting spot at quarterback. Only four quarterbacks return from last season after the graduation of starter Carter Hill.
The 6-4 dual-threat passer led Carmichaels to the WPIAL Class A Playoffs as a senior, passing for 1,619 yards and 19 touchdowns. He will reunite with former teammate Ty Aeschbacher, who is a wide receiver for Waynesburg.
