Robert Martin Pompe

Robert Martin Pompe, 72, of Burgettstown, passed away Sunday, January 27, 2013, in Washington Hospital, after a brief illness.

He was born October 29, 1940, in Joffre, a son of the late Martin D. and Regina Ocepek Pompe.

Mr. Pompe was a 1958 graduate of Union High School in Burgettstown.

After graduation, he served in the U.S. Air Force, when he met his future wife, Nancy Mason, in Cold Lake, Alberta, Canada, while she served in the Canadian Air Force.

After being honorably discharged from the Air Force and while working for Allegheny Airlines, he graduated from Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics with an air frame and power plant degree.

From June 1966 until October 1998, he worked for U.S. Airways as a mechanic and foreman and retired as an aircraft maintenance duty manager.

Mr. Pompe enjoyed golf and was active in Monday Men’s League at Ponderosa Golf Course. He spend winters in Bradenton, Fla., where he enjoyed watching the Pirates spring training and attending his grandchildren’s activities, especially soccer.

He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Burgettstown and was active in American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

On August 31, 1963, he married his wife of 49 years, Nancy Mason, who survives.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons, Jeffrey R. Pompe and wife Robin of Cross Creek and Mark S. Pompe of Vestaburg; two daughters, Cindy Walters, wife of the late Roger of Slovan, and Shelly Hyde and husband Lee of Belmont, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Amanda, Samantha, Elizabeth and Alex Pompe and Allie, Amy and Alyssa Hyde; a sister, Judy Prado and husband Jerry of McMurray; a daughter-in-law, Susan Pompe of Sturgeon; a brother-in-law, Hank McClements of Hickory; an aunt and godmother, Jean Maslyk of Burgettstown; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, is a sister, Joan McClements.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Lee and Martin Funeral Home, 73 Highland Avenue, Burgettstown. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 30, in Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, Burgettstown, with the Rev. George Moneck as celebrant. Interment will follow in Mt. Prospect Cemetery, Hickory.
