JEFFERSON – An argument shortly before 6 p.m. Monday at Demaske’s Tavern, 1447 Jefferson Road, ended with one man bleeding and another charged with aggravated assault.

State police said Arthur Ransom Overby, 76, of 139 First St., Clarksville, used an unknown sharp object to cut Clyde Smith on the head after a verbal fight between the pair turned physical. Smith had a large cut on the top of his head with severe bleeding, according to the criminal complaint.

Smith told police Overby started to argue with him and then pushed him. He said Overby then grabbed him, and said, “I will kill you,” and then cut him, according to the complaint.

Police said Overby told them it was Smith who approached him first and he “defended himself the best he could.”

The criminal complaint does not explain the reason for the dispute between Overby and Smith.

Overby was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Lee Watson and placed in Greene County jail on $30,000 straight cash bond.

He is also charged with terroristic threats and simple assault. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Feb. 19 before Watson.
