Iowa throttles No. 17 Maryland
Iowa could be primed for a big run the final month of the season.
Maryland could soon be in danger of a slide at the tail end of its first year in the Big Ten.
Aaron White scored 17 points, Adam Woodbury matched a career high with 16 and Iowa throttled 17th-ranked Maryland 71-55 Sunday.
Peter Jok also matched a career high with 15 points for the Hawkeyes (6-4, 15-8), who’ve won two straight to finish a brutal 10-game start to league play above .500.
Iowa opened the game on a 22-3 run and handed the Terrapins their third straight road loss – all by double digits.
“We got going offensively and it snowballed on them a little bit,” Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said.
The Terrapins (7-4, 19-5) scored just 17 points on 6-of-25 shooting in the first half as Iowa raced out to a 23-point lead. Maryland got within 15 before a technical foul on coach Mark Turgeon with 10 minutes left slowed much of its momentum.
Melo Trimble had 20 points to lead Maryland, which was outrebounded 30-19.
“They were really good. But I imagine we had a lot to do with it,” Turgeon said. “Turnovers. Shooting quick … as a coach I’ve got to do a better job of having us prepared offensively.”
Maryland had been awful in its last two road games, losing at Indiana and Ohio State by 43 combined points.
The Terrapins looked just as bad against the Hawkeyes.
Maryland had as many turnovers, eight, as shots in the first 10 minutes. Its defense was even worse, allowing Iowa – which entered play 12th in the Big Ten in field goal percentage – to hit 10 of its first 15 shots.
No. 20 Ohio State 79, Rutgers 60: Freshman D’Angelo Russell had 23 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds for his first college triple-double and No. 20 Ohio State took command early and rolled to a 79-60 victory over Rutgers, sending the Scarlet Knights to their eighth straight loss.
Jae’San Tate added 20 points and Keita Bates-Diop had 14 to help the Buckeyes (7-4 Big Ten, 18-6) bounce back from a loss at Purdue for their fourth time in five games.
Bishop Daniels had a season-high 17 points for the Scarlet Knights (2-10, 10-15), and Junior Etou added 12 points and 11 rebounds. They haven’t won since upsetting then-No. 4 Wisconsin Jan. 11.
Indiana 70, Michigan 67: Troy Williams had 20 points and eight rebounds to lead the Indiana Hoosiers to a 70-67 victory over the Michigan Wolverines.
Yogi Ferrell had 18 points and six assists, and James Blackmon, Jr. added 13 for the Hoosiers (7-4 Big Ten, 17-7), who have won two of three games.
Zak Irvin had 23 points and Ricky Doyle finished with 15 points and six rebounds for the Wolverines (6-6, 13-11), who have lost three straight.
Spike Albrecht converted a 3-point play with 1:18 remaining to put the Wolverines within three, 65-62, and the Hoosiers did just enough to keep the lead.
