Waynesburg man charged with assault
WAYNESBURG – A Waynesburg man is being held on $15,000 straight cash bond after he allegedly assaulted another man, sending him to the hospital, following an argument at a Waynesburg Borough residence.
Dennis R. Hayes Sr., 43, 175 W. Elm St., Apt. 1, was arrested Wednesday at the 905 Sherman Ave. residence of his mother after police responded to a call for an assault.
While in route, police were alerted an alleged assault victim was unconscious on the kitchen floor at the Elm Street apartment, according to a criminal complaint filed by Waynesburg Borough police officer Tom Ankrom II.
When police arrived, they found James Temple unresponsive on the floor with a pool of blood around his head. Ankrom said a large chunk of Temple’s hair was also on the floor. Blood was also on the kitchen cabinets and below the sink, according to the complaint.
A witness told police Temple was drinking a beer at the kitchen table with Lisa Durbin when Hayes arrived at his home. Hayes apparently became upset with Temple and the two men began to fight. Police said Hayes pushed Temple over a washing machine, struck him in the face, then kicked him in the head several times. When police were called, Hayes fled the residence.
Temple was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va.
After Temple was taken by ambulance, police went to Hayes’s mother’s Sherman Avenue residence where he was arrested. Ankrom said Hayes told him Temple pulled out a carpet knife and Hayes struck him in the mouth. He claimed Temple began to smack his own head off of the kitchen cabinet, causing his injuries.
Hayes is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, and harassment by physical contact.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 2 p.m. March 10 before Magisterial District Judge Glenn Bates.
