American Legion celebration planned

Filer-Sadlek American Legion Post 954 in Jefferson will celebrate the 96th birthday of the American Legion with a dinner at the post home Saturday.
Post 954 will recognize students in Jefferson-Morgan School District who were recipients of awards in American Legion programs.
The post also will recognize and honor its nominee for educator of the year, Rob Ardeno, who is a middle school social studies teacher at Jefferson-Morgan. Ardeno’s nomination will be submitted to the state to be judged with others.
In addition, the post will recognize and honor women veterans who are members of Post 954. They are Lucille DeFrank, Nicole L. Mort, Barbara Smith and Lenora Stanko.
The post also will present certificates and American Legion lapel pins to post members who have attained 50, 55 and 60 years of continuous membership in the American Legion.
Those who will be recognized are Charles Ferencak, 50 years; James Ferencak, 50 years; Floyd Walters, 55 years; George Shimet, 55 years; and Glenn Yorko, 60 years.
Student awards and the recipients are as follows:
• The Robert E. Titus Award will be presented to Hannah Agnew and Chase Kovalcheck, who were tied for first place in their 10th-grade class at the end of the 2013-14 year; and to Autumn Baye Summers, who placed first in her 11th-grade class.
• The Color-It-Proud winners were: pre-kindergarten, Slavo Gustovich; kindergarten, Miles Sowden; first grade, Addalei Larkin; second grade, Brendan Wood; third grade, Adam McAnany; and fourth grade, Casey Schaum.
• The sixth-grade essay winners were: first place, Molly Mylan; second place, Brandon Lawrence; and third place, Sam Settie.
• The seventh-grade essay winners were: first place, Madison Kovach; and second place, Alicia Johnston.
• The eighth-grade essay winners were: first place, Cameron Cernuska; and second place, Alexandra Royer.
The dinner will begin at 6 p.m. The speaker will be Kit D. Watson, department adjutant of the Pennsylvania American Legion. Watson is a member of Cumberland Post 400, Carmichaels, and is a past 25th District commander. He and his wife, Debbie, reside in Enola.
