Residents, environmentalists and drilling companies alike will have more time to comment on the state Department of Environmental Protection’s proposed regulations for natural gas development.
In addition to extending the 30-day comment period, the DEP also added three public hearings regarding its revisions to the state’s conventional and unconventional gas drilling rules. A public hearing will be held at 6 p.m. April 29 in Washington & Jefferson College’s Allen Ballroom in the Rossin Campus Center.
The DEP proposed stricter regulations that would ban the use of on-site wastewater pits, except for those used at conventional well sites and restrict the use of typically larger, centralized impoundments. It also included provisions to improve data management by requiring all documents and reports to be submitted electronically to the DEP.
Two other hearings will be held at Warren County Courthouse April 30 and the Pennsylvania College of Technology’s Klump Academic Center in Williamsport May 4.
Those who wish to speak at a public hearing are asked to keep their testimony under five minutes and bring three copies of their comments and exhibits for submission. Speakers can register in advance by calling the DEP Policy Office at 717-783-8727.
Written comments will be accepted until May 19 via email at RegComments@pa.gov or mail at DEP Policy Office, 400 Market St., P.O. Box 2063, Harrisburg, PA 17105-2063.
