CHARLEROI – A former Charleroi councilman was seated Wednesday to serve as the borough’s mayor through the end of the year.

Borough council voted 3-2 to appoint Mark Alterici to replace John Mollenauer, who resigned last month, saying he no longer felt welcome in office. An attempt to fill the office April 2 failed to reach a majority vote on Alterici and another applicant nominated for the office.

Deb Buck, Jerry Jericho and Terry Newstrom voted in favor of the appointment Wednesday, while councilmen Larry Celaschi and Ed Bryner cast no votes on the matter at the special meeting.

“Thank you. I appreciate your support,” Alterici said before he was sworn into office by District Judge Larry Hopkins.

The Democratic and Republican committees in Washington County will name a candidate for Charleroi mayor to appear on the November ballot, borough solicitor Alan Benyak said.
