Canonsburg police expect to file charges related to a home break-in early Friday morning, but not for the events that occurred about eight hours later, culminating in a chase that prompted area schools to go on lockdown.
Darnell Steven Brown, 35, whose last known address was in Washington, was arrested by Canonsburg police at 10 a.m. and taken to Washington County jail on an outstanding bench warrant. Police Chief Alex Coghill said they expect to file additional charges related to a home break-in that occurred at 1:25 a.m. at 534 S. Central Ave.
Police said they received a call from resident Michael Harney, who reported he and his girlfriend, Kristina Metz, were sleeping in a bedroom upstairs when they heard a loud noise at the front door early Friday morning.
Harney told police he went to the door and saw Brown, whom he recognized, holding a silver pistol.
Harney told police Brown, who is the father of Metz’s son, kicked in their door and started asking for money. Harney said he followed Brown down the steps and around the residence, telling Brown repeatedly they did not have any money. He told police Brown appeared to be under the influence of drugs.
Brown then allegedly got into the passenger side of a car and left. Both Harney and Metz told police they believed Brown was dangerous. They said Brown was threatening them and asking for money in text messages to Metz for at least a week.
Police said Brown returned to the residence later Friday morning. Police responded and ended up chasing Brown for about 30 minutes. Area schools went on lockdown as a precaution, but restrictions were lifted once Brown was taken into custody.
Brown was found in the 600 block of South Central Avenue, and he did not have any weapons, police said.
