The Southwest Regional Medical Center’s Wound Care & Hyperbaric Center is raising awareness of chronic wounds.

The second annual Wound Care Awareness Week, sponsored by Healogics, was held this week to let area residents know about advanced therapies offered to patients suffering from chronic wounds. Program directors across the nation spent the week visiting local physician offices to provide education and help staff to identify patients that may benefit from advanced wound care.

It is estimated chronic wounds affect 6.7 million people in the United States, and the incidence is rising. This increase is fueled by an aging population and increasing rates of diseases and conditions such as diabetes, obesity and late effects of radiation therapy. Untreated chronic wounds can lead to diminished quality of life and possibly amputation of the affected limb.

People with wounds that have not improved with traditional methods of treatment may benefit from a visit to WCHC at 220 Greene Plaza in Franklin Township. Call 724-627-1600 to schedule an appointment.
