ALLENTOWN (AP) – The Justice Department says a Pennsylvania school district’s poor handling of sexual harassment allegations warrants extending federal supervision until 2017.

The Morning Call reports the department’s Civil Rights Division arguing in court papers that Allentown’s school district failed to comply with a consent decree stemming from a student’s sexual abuse of younger students a decade ago.

Justice Department lawyers say the district failed to improve Title IX compliance, missed deadlines to revise policies and didn’t adequately train teachers and staff members.

They also say the district failed to investigate allegations of harassment, including several against a security guard accused of calling a high school student a “sexy young chocolate lady.”

A district lawyer tells the newspaper he sees the criticism and calls for a two-year extension as excessive and “Monday morning quarterbacking.”
