CARMICHAELS – Barring any unexpected delays, students will be starting the new school year, as scheduled, in a newly renovated Carmichaels Area High School.
“The final push is on,” Superintendent John Menhart told the school board Thursday in an update on the school renovation project.
Contractors brought in additional workers and began working both Fridays and Saturdays to complete the work on time, Menhart said. Previously, most crews worked a schedule of four, 10-hour days, he later explained.
Contractors expect to allow the district access to 12 rooms on the second floor of the building Tuesday and to the remaining rooms on that floor the following week, he said. This will leave only the gymnasium, offices and library yet to be completed.
Menhart said he believes students will be in the building on the scheduled first day of classes, though work on some minor “punch list” items may still have to be finished.
The renovation project is expected to be completed by Aug. 20. Classes for students begin Aug. 25.
The renovation of the middle school was completed earlier.
Furniture, books and teaching supplies have all been moved into the middle school classrooms and teachers can now come in and get their rooms ready for the year, maintenance supervisor Dave Franks said.
The estimated cost of the middle and high school renovation project was $20.4 million. Menhart said Thursday the project is expected to be completed within budget.
The district also will be starting a pre-kindergarten program this year. High School Principal Lisa Zdravecky said the district now has 39 applicants on file.
The district will have two pre-kindergarten classrooms. Franks reported furniture for the pre-kindergarten program is scheduled to arrive July 28.
The board acted on several personnel matters.
The board hired Paige Huber as a middle school English and language arts teacher; Emily Lohrer as a middle school science teacher and Brittany Phillips as a business, computer and information technology teacher.
The board accepted the resignation of Zachery Gouzd, a French and science teacher.
Former Superintendent Craig Baily was appointed federal funds advisor at no cost to the district.
The board also appointed Cassie Menhart senior class sponsor; and hired Shane King as junior high girls basketball coach.
The board re-scheduled its August meeting until 8 p.m. Aug. 13 in the elementary music room.
