A new scholarship has been established at the Community Foundation of Greene County in memory of Russell Guthrie of Jefferson.
The Russell A. Guthrie Memorial Scholarship was recently established as a non-endowed scholarship by his parents. Guthrie passed away in September 2014 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Guthrie’s mother, Beverly, said they wanted to do something to help keep their son’s memory alive and to have some good come out of his untimely death.
“Helping a student attend college or technical school is something Russell would be proud to see happen,” she said.
The scholarship is for seniors graduating from Jefferson-Morgan High School with a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average and planning to attend a post-secondary technical school, college, or university. One $500 award will be announced next spring.
Applications will be available through the Community Foundation of Greene County’s website www.cfgcpa.org, and the Jefferson-Morgan High School Guidance Counselor’s office beginning January 2016.
Memorial contributions can be made to the scholarship fund through the Community Foundation of Greene County.
According to Bettie Stammerjohn, executive director of the Community Foundation, the nonendowed scholarship concept is new to the foundation.
“Typically, our scholarship funds have been ‘endowed’ funds which means they are permanent and the contributions are invested to grow over the years,” Stammerjohn said. “A nonendowed fund means that the funds are not invested as part of the permanent endowment and will not grow with additional contributions each year.”
