Tomlin, Steelers agree to two-year contract extension
PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Steelers and coach Mike Tomlin have agreed to a contract extension that will keep him with the team through 2018.
Financial terms of the deal announced Thursday were not disclosed. Tomlin is 82-46 with Pittsburgh since replacing Bill Cowher following the 2006 season. The Steelers have won one Super Bowl and appeared in another under Tomlin and are coming off an 11-5 mark and an AFC North title in 2014.
“I very much appreciate this contract extension, but my sole focus has been and will continue to be meeting the challegnes that lie ahead for the 2015 season,” Tomlin said in a statement. “These past nine years in Pittsburgh have been a wonderful experienence for my family, and I look forward to pursuing what is the Steelers’ goal every year – bringing another Super Bowl championship to the city of Pittsburgh.”
Steelers President Art Rooney II called Tomlin “one of the top coaches” in the NFL. Tomlin, 43, is entering his ninth season as the Steelers head coach and has led the team to four AFC North titles and five playoff appearances. He has led Pittsburgh to at least five home games in each of his eight seasons, and his 47 regular-season home victories during that span are the fourth-most in the NFL. He became the youngest head coach in NFL history to both coach in and win a Super Bowl when the Steelers defeated the Arizona Cardinals 27-23 to win Super Bowl XLIII.
“I am pleased to announce we have extended Mike Tomlin’s contract through the 2018 season,” Rooney said in a press release. “Mike has proven he is one of the top head coaches in the National Football League, and we are confident he will continue to lead the team in our pursuit of another Super Bowl championship.”
