WAYNESBURG – Things didn’t look good on paper for the Waynesburg High School football team heading into Friday night’s Interstate Conference matchup against Washington.

Not only were the Raiders 0-2 after scoring a total of eight points in their first two games, but they were matched against a 2-0 Prexies team that had outscored its first two opponents 110-7.

Sometimes the stats don’t tell the whole story.

But in this case, they did.

Washington rushed for 336 yards – including 221 by senior Kurt Adkins – and put Waynesburg away early in a 42-0 rout.

“It’s always a big game when Wash High and Waynesburg get together,” said Prexies head coach Mike Bosnic. “Traditionally, it is a tough game for both schools. We did some good things today.”

The Prexies (3-0, 3-0) struck quickly and often.

Washington scored 42 points (35 by the offense) in the first half and didn’t have a scoring drive exceed three plays. In fact, the Prexies scored five touchdowns on their first 17 plays from scrimmage.

“We made some big plays all night,” Bosnic said. “We had some guys do some special things and make some athletic plays. We have to clean a lot of things up, though. We are not anywhere close where we need to be.”

A lot of the damage early was done by Adkins, gained his 211 yards on nine carries, scoring three first-half touchdowns before Washington sat its starters in the final two quarters.

Adkins took the Prexies second play from scrimmage 68 yards for a touchdown. And he was just getting started.

After Isaiah Schoonmaker returned a fumble 22 yards for a touchdown to make it 14-0, Adkins took Wash High’s fourth offensive play 38 yards for another touchdown.

Washington quarterback Markel Pulliam then scored on a 3-yard touchdown run moments later to make it 28-0.

An interception by Jarrell Dates set up another Prexies’ touchdown, this time a 24-yard run from Jordan West.

Wash High got the ball back with just over 20 seconds remaining in the first half, but it only took Adkins one play to score again. He took a draw 53 yards for another touchdown to give the Prexies a 42-0 halftime lead.

“Kurt is a special player,” said Bosnic. “I have been blessed as a coach to have some really great backs. He has his own unique running style. He is second-to-none in terms of shiftiness and vision and along with that he has great speed.”

The Prexies’ defense limited the Raiders to next to nothing as an offense, allowing the Raiders six first downs and 97 total yards.

“Wash High doesn’t have to rebuild, they just reload,” said Waynesburg head coach Russ Moore. “They have way too much speed everywhere. They are a well-coached football team.”

Wash High will look to continue its hot start to the season when it hosts Brownsville next Friday.

Meanwhile, Waynesburg will look for something positive to take out of this game as the Raiders dead into another tough game at Mount Pleasant.

“We have to find out who we are,” said Moore. “Right now, we have to get better as we go. We have to find some guys who can start making some plays and get things rolling.”
