W&J’s Lis sets record in romp over Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio – Seven different players scored and Daniel Lis set a record to push Washington & Jefferson College’s football team to an impressive 56-10 season-opening victory against Wooster Saturday afternoon.
Lis, a Chartiers-Houston graduate, set a school record when he returned a punt 93 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. He eclipsed the previous record of 92 yards held by Larry Pitts against Juniata in 1989.
Ryan Ruffing, who rushed for 106 yards on 14 carries, scored on a pair of five-yard runs in the first half as W&J built a 28-10 halftime lead.
Eric Scott had five catches for 80 yards and an 11-yard TD reception from quarterback Pete Coughlin in the first quarter. Coughlin completed 21 of 27 passes for 229 yards and was not intercepted.
Coughlin scored on a five-yard run in the second quarter and tossed a five-yard scoring pass to Colin Jones in the third.
David Kincaid and Austin Kemp also scored on second-half runs.
Washington & Jefferson won its fifth straight season opener and eighth in the last nine years. The Presidents improved to 89-33-2 in their 124 season openers.
Ryan Torrance led W&J’s defense with 11 tackles, one shy of a career-high and the sixth time in the last 12 games he has double figures in tackles.
