Canon-Mac track work running behind
CANONSBURG – A new track scheduled to have been installed in August still hasn’t been completed, and Canon-McMillan school officials aren’t happy about it.
A news release from the district Monday said the school board Thursday authorized the administration and solicitor “to initiate all appropriate action against paving contractor Nagle Athletic Surfaces Inc. and any other involved parties to facilitate completion of the high school track.”
Whether that involves suing the Syracuse-based company, Superintendent Michael Daniels wouldn’t say.
“We’re in the process of engaging with the installer to get the project completed,” Daniels said. “We really don’t know what direction we’ll ultimately end up taking yet at this point.”
In May, the board approved a plan to install turf on the football field and resurface the track at a cost of about $1.2 million. Nagle Athletic Surfaces Inc. received the contract to resurface the track at a cost of $312,480. The contract to replace the turf, which was deemed unsafe for use after dips and bumps were found on the artificial surface, was awarded to ProGrass at a cost of $914,050. The football field was finished on time.
During a September meeting, school board President Paul Scarmazzi echoed parents’ disappointment about a still-unusable track.
“We’re frustrated beyond belief. We really can’t comment beyond that,” he said.
“The district intends to have a completed track. To get there, there are some issues we need to resolve contractually,” Daniels said Monday.
The district solicitor, Jocelyn Kramer, could not be reached for comment.
