McGuffey dominates at J-M
McGuffey won 11 of 14 bouts Wednesday night on its way to a 63-17 victory over Jefferson-Morgan in a Section 2A dual meet in Class AA.
Jake Garretty (113), Jett Pattison (120), Jeffrey McConn (145), Christian Clutter (152), Dylon Richey (160) and Austin Fisher (220) got pins for the Highlanders. McGuffey took a quick 12-0 lead after two forfeits, but Bill Bowlen’s pin at 195 drew the Rockets (0-1, 0-1) to within six. The Highlanders won the next two bouts before J-M got six points from a forfeit at 106, but back-to-back pins gave McGuffey the commanding lead.
Jefferson-Morgan sophomore Gavin Teasdale (126), a defending state champion, won by techinical fall over Teague Nicolella, 25-10, but the Highlanders won the final five bouts to secure the win.
Burgettstown 39, Laurel 22: Laurel won four of the final seven contested bouts, but could not overcome a slow start as it lost to Burgettstown, 39-22, in a Section 1B dual meet in Class AA.
The Blue Devils (1-0, 1-0) started the meet with a pin by Austin Ryan (126) and James Murphy (132) won by decision before Ethan Brothers’s victory by forfet gave them an 18-0 lead. Laurel (0-1, 0-1) won five of the next eight bouts, including at major decision by Sam Garner (170), but Burgettstown got a pin by Brad Hucik (220) to put the score out of reach. Tyler Nicholson (182) also got a pin for Burgettstown, while Laurel got pins from Russell Cyphert (195) and Will Peterson (heavyweight).
Burrell 42, Waynesburg 23: Burrell jumped out to a 36-point lead and had to overcome two losses by major decision in a 42-23 victory over Waynesburg in a non-section match.
The Bucs (1-0) started the meet by winning six of the first seven bouts with pins from Anthony Marra (170), Robert Scherer (195), Alex Moses (220) and Bryce Gual (106). During that span, the Raiders’ only points came on a pin by Colin McCracken (182) over Austin Scherba in 3:35. Facing the 36-point deficit, Waynesburg (0-1) got back-to-back wins by major decision from Caleb Morris (120) and Cole Rush (126) before wins by Logan Henderson and Sean Wilson by decision.
Burrell won two of the final four bouts, including Damon Greenwald’s 7-6 decision at 160, to secure the win.
Beth-Center 48, Mapletown 24: Beth-Center won nine of 14 bouts on its way to a 48-24 win over Mapletown in a Section 2A dual meet in Class AA.
Jacob Housel (132), Tyler Markoff (138), Dominic Fundy (170) and Tony Welsh (182) got pins for the Bulldogs, who also won by four forfeits. The Maples (0-1) got wins by Seth Shubert (145), Tanner Weston (220) and Harley Gee (heavyweight).
Peters Township 56, Baldwin 18: Peters Township won 11 of 14 bouts on its way to a 56-18 victory over Baldwin in a Section 2B dual meet in Class AAA.
Winning by major decision for the Indians (1-0, 1-0) were Brandon Matthews (113) and Coltin Jezioro (126), whiel Jeff Market (170) and Mike McAleavy (220) got pins. Ian Armbruster won by injury default over Caden Moran for the Highlanders (0-1, 0-1) and Connor Sidruk (145) got a pin.
Washington 42, Avella 28: Washington only needed to win one of the five contested bouts to defeat Avella, 42-28, in a Section 1A dual meet in Class AA.
The Prexies (1-0, 1-0) were aided by six forfeits and their only win in a contest bout was by Kurt Adkins (152), who pinned Brandon Snyder at 3:40. Avella got pins from Dalton Simonelli (170), Dean Simonelli (195) and Randall Kidwell (220), and Luke Lloyd (145) won by major decision.
Bentworth 48, West Greene 21: There were only four bouts contested and West Greene won three of them, but Bentworth pulled out a 48-21 Class AA Section 2A victory over the Pioneers because the latter forfeited seven weight classes.
West Greene’s Joey Chapman (138) and Connor Main (220) each won by fall in two of the four bouts that were contested. Bentworth’s Ryan Wise (195) won by fall.
