Steelers rally to kick off ‘Black and Gold Day’ in Waynesburg
WAYNESBURG – Greene County will show its support for the Pittsburgh Steelers during their run through the playoffs with a rally at noon Friday on the steps of Greene County Courthouse.
“We want everyone to come out and show our community’s support for the Steelers,” Waynesburg Mayor Duncan Berryman said Wednesday. “We want to see everybody dressed in their best black and gold.”
In honor of the occasion, Berryman has issued an official proclamation declaring Friday “Black and Gold Day in the Borough of Waynesburg.”
This is not the first time people have rallied at the courthouse to support the Steelers, said Athena Bowman, the borough’s administrative assistant who is helping to organize the event.
“We did it back in 2006 and I think we also did it another year,” she said of when the Steelers won Super Bowl XL following the 2005 season.
The rallies always drew a good crowd, she said.
“We received a lot of participation from local businesses and from county employees,” she said.
The event will, of course, include Steeler chants and cheers. Bowman said she also would like to get a photo of the crowd, as she has done at past rallies.
“We want to show people we have a lot of county residents who are big Steelers fans,” she said. “And that this county is part of Steeler Nation.”
The Steelers will play the Denver Broncos Sunday afternoon in the AFC Divisional Playoff game. The game starts at 4:40 p.m. and can be viewed locally on KDKA-TV.
