W&J women stay unbeaten at home
Washington & Jefferson dominated the middle two quarters Saturday and rolled to a 77-59 victory over visiting Bethany in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference women’s basketball game.
W&J (7-1, 12-3) remained undefeated at home, improving its record to 8-0 at Henry Memorial Center. Bethany (4-4, 6-9) has lost three of its last four.
Bethany led 20-18 after the first quarter, but W&J took control of the game by outscoring the Bison 21-9 in the pivotal second quarter. The Presidents pushed their lead to 63-45 after three quarters.
Sisters Beka and Rachel Bellhy combined for 35 points to spark the W&J attack. Beka Bellhy had a game-high 23 points on 8 of 12 shooting from the field and 7 of 8 at the free-throw line. She also had 10 rebounds. Rachel Bellhy scored 12 points and Amirah Moore had 11 points and five assists.
Bethany was led by Ashley Duthie, who came off the bench to score 15 points.
Waynesburg 84, Chatham 64: Waynesburg scored 52 second-half points to pull away from visiting Chatham and defeat the Cougars, 84-64, in a PAC game.
It was the fourth win in a row for Waynesburg (6-2, 8-7), which led 32-25 at halftime. The Yellow Jackets didn’t shake Chatham (2-6, 6-9) until they opened the second half with a 10-1 run that included consecutive three-pointers by Heather Davis.
Katie Gehlmann led three Waynesburg players in double figures with 16 points. Addy Knetzer scored all of her 14 points in the second half. Maura Bobby also had 14 points for Waynesburg, which shot 52 percent for the game. The Yellow Jackets hammered Chatham on the boards with a 57-37 rebounding edge. Knetzer had 13 rebounds.
Megan Sieg led Chatham with 13 points.
California 64, Slippery Rock 52: Precious Martin led five California players in double figures with 16 points and the Vulcans defeated cold-shooting Slippery Rock 64-52 in a PSAC game.
California improved to 9-3 in the conference and 11-4 overall. The Vulcans moved into a second-place tie with Gannon in the West Division. Gannon lost at home to Seton Hill.
Slippery Rock is 5-8, 8-10. The Rock has lost seven of its last eight games.
Slippery Rock shot only 29 percent for the game and scored just 33 points in the first three quarters. Lexi Carpenter (16 points) and Ciara Patterson (15 points) combined to make more than half of Slippery Rock’s 17 field goals.
Cal led 25-22 at halftime, then opened the second half with an 11-0 run that included seven points from Martin. The Rock never got closer than seven for the remainder of the game.
Seiarra Barrett (11 points, 18 rebounds), Shatra Parsons (13 points, 13 rebounds) and Martin (11 rebounds) each had a double-double for the Vulcans. Miki Glenn scored 11 points.
Waynesburg 80, Chatham 69: Seniors B.J. Durham and D.J. Ritchie combined for 38 points to lead host Waynesburg to an 80-69 victory over Chatham in a PAC game.
Durham, a guard, scored a game-high 22 points and helped Waynesburg (3-5, 3-12) win for the third time in five home games. Ritchie, a forward, followed with 16 points.
Chatham (3-5, 3-12) had a two-game winning streak snapped. The Cougars were led by Alex Schoppen’s 16 points. Chatham is playing its first season of men’s basketball.
Waynesburg used a 21-5 run to turn a 10-10 tie into a 31-15 advantage. Christian Koroly scored seven of his nine points during the run.
Chatham battled back and pulled to within 63-60 with 7:15 remaining, but a 10-2 spurt by Waynesburg pushed the Yellow Jackets’ lead back to double digits and Chatham never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
Slippery Rock 61, California 56: Chaquille Pratt scored 24 points and Slippery Rock held visiting California to two field goals in the final 6½ minutes as The Rock rallied for a 61-56 victory in a PSAC West Division game.
California (4-8, 6-11) used a 6-0 run to take a 49-47 lead after a basket by Nate Bellhy with 6:49 left to play. Slippery Rock (4-8, 9-9) then closed the game on a 14-7 run.
Tony Richardson, with 11 points, was the only player to score in double figures for Cal, which missed 10 free throws in the second half and was 11-for-22 in the game. Slippery Rock made 18 of 21 free throws.
Bethany 71, Wash & Jeff 62: Antonio Rudolph had 17 points and nine rebounds, and Bethany’s depth paid off during a 71-62 victory over Washington & Jefferson in a PAC game at Henry Memorial Center.
The game was tied 44-44 with 10 minutes remaining, when Bethany (6-2, 10-5) went on a 14-1 run. W&J (0-8, 0-15) was unable to get closer than six points the rest of the way. Bethany is in third place in the PAC standings.
Andrew Williams came off the bench and scored five of his 13 points during Bethany’s key second-half surge. The Bison reserves scored 26 points.
Four players scored in double figures for W&J, led by Brian Lindquist, who had game-highs of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Brian Graytok and Christian Rohaus each scored 12 points and Kodie Hanley matched his career high with 11. Hanley also had nine rebounds.
Calique Jones scored 15 points for Bethany.
