Thiel outlasts W&J men in double overtime

The Washington & Jefferson men’s team keeps getting closer to its first win of the season but it remains elusive.

The Presidents took Thiel to double overtime Wednesday night before the Tomcats pulled out an 84-80 Presidents’ Athletic Conference victory.

W&J (0-10, 0-17) wiped away a double-digit deficit in the second half and forced overtime, but Thiel (6-5, 8-10) out scored the Presidents 10-6 in the second extra five-minute session.

Clandell Cetoute made 10 of 13 shots and scored a team-high 21 poinst to lead Thiel, which led 37-20 at halftime.

W&J’s Briuan Graytok scored a game-high 28 points and led four W&J players in doduble figures. Joe Satira scored 18 points, Adam Joyce had 13 and Brian Lindquist 12.

Westminster 66, Waynesburg 65: Deontay Scott scored 22 points and Westminster held off visiting Waynesburg 66-65 in a PAC game.

The loss snapped a three-game winning streak by Waynesburg. Both teams are 5-6 in the conference and 5-13 overall.

The game was close throughout as Westminster led 33-31 at halftime. The Titans led 66-63 before Waynesburg’s B.J. Durham made two free throws with 12 seconds left to make it a one-point game. Westminster’s Paul Carswell then missed two free throws with seven seconds to play but Durham missed a three-pointer and time expired.

Brennan Smith led Waynesburg in scoring with 14 points and D.J. Ritchie had 11.

IUP 85, California 60: An efficient offense for the Indiana allowed it to pull away early and cruise to an 85-60 victory over host California in a PSAC West Division game.

IUP (12-3, 15-5) only led by three points with 7:46 left in the first half; however, a 23-12 run allowed it to extend its lead to 44-30 heading into halftime. The Crimson Hawks were able to continue to pour it on following the break, after another run pushed their lead to 52-33 with 16:31 remaining in the second half.

Leading the way for IUP’s impressive 54 percent field goal shooting performance was senior guard Brandon Norfleet, who scored a game-high 25 points.

Cal (4-11, 7-14) was paced by the efforts of Khalil Jabbie, who led the Vulcans with 17 points. Luka Andjusic and Richard Smith scored 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Wash & Jeff 100, Thiel 67: Beka Bellhy scored 18 points as Washington & Jefferson cruised to a 100-67 victory over visiting Thiel in the PAC.

It was the second time in program history that the Presidents scored 100 points in a game.

W&J (10-1, 15-3) scored 52 second-half points after building a 48-29 lead at halftime. The win was the fifth in a row for the Presidents.

Thiel fell to 1-10 in the PAC and 1-17 overall.

W&J put only three players in double figures as 12 different Presidents scored. Amirah Moore had 15 points on 7 of 11 shooting and had five assists. Ashley Mikelonis came off the bench to score 12 points. Rachel Bellhy almost had a double-double as she scored eight points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

Westminster 83, Waynesburg 80: Kristine Fromknecht scored a game-high 26 points and Westminster stunned Waynesburg 83-80 in a PAC game in new Wilmington.

Westminster (2-9, 2-16) snapped a five-game losing streak. The Titans, who had not scored more than 64 points in a game all season, shot 47 percent from the field, made 21 of 26 free throws and took advantage of a Waynesburg defense that has allowed 202 points in its last two games.

The Titans trailed 43-41 at halftime but outscored Waynesburg 25-15 in the pivotal third quarter and protected the lead down the stretch. Waynesburg trailed 79-70 with 2:21 remaining but closed to whtin 82-80 after a layup by Addy Knetzer with five seconds remaining.

Westminster’s Paige Quinn converted two free throws with three seconds left and Knetzer missed on a desperation three-pointer as time expired.

Waynesburg made 13 three-pointers but the Yellow Jackets made only 15 of 28 free throws. Heather Davis led Waynesburg with 20 points, including six three-pointers. Knetzer scored 15 points and grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds, Lauren Blair had 11 points, and Katie Ghelmann and Kassidy O’Keffe each finished with 10 points.
