PITTSBURGH (AP) – An attorney for a man accused of killing the sister of a Pennsylvania lawmaker and was shot by police following a chase says she doesn’t think her client is capable of committing the alleged crimes.

Charles McKinney is accused of killing 29-year-old Janese Talton outside a Pittsburgh bar early Friday morning after she rejected his advances. Police shot McKinney when his vehicle allegedly nearly hit two officers before speeding toward several others.

Talton was the sister of Pittsburgh Democratic state Rep. Ed Gainey.

The 41-year-old Penn Hills man faces charges including homicide and aggravated assault.

His attorney tells the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that McKinney doesn’t appear to be the type of person “who would do something like that.”

McKinney has been jailed. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 5.
