Trinity boys notch road win
Sophomore forward Ben Phillis scored a game-high 14 points and Trinity took control early as the Hillers defeated host Mt. Pleasant, 47-36, in a non-section game Saturday afternoon.
Trinity (11-8) forged a double-digit lead in the first quarter, leading 19-6 after one quarter. Trinity maintained the lead at double digits for much of the game. The Hillers led 27-14 at halftime and 40-28 after three quarters.
Phillies was the lone Trinity players to score in double figures. Freshman Jaden Nelson had nine points. The Hillers played without Joey Koroly, who was their leading scorer in a win Friday night over McGuffey.
Jason Berenak scored 12 points for Mt. Pleasant. The Vikings will take a 7-15 record into the Class AAA playoffs.
Trinity, which has won seven of its last nine games, will play its regular-season finale Monday at home against Ringgold.
Charleroi 86, Waynesburg 57: Brock Shannon, Sam Miceli and John Arnold combined for 73 points, Charleroi made 15 three-point field goals and the Cougars rolled to an 86-57 victory over visiting Waynesburg 86-57 in the Section 4-AAA finale for both teams.
Charleroi (10-2, 16-5), the section runner-up, started quickly, scoring 32 points in the first quarter and leading 56-34 at halftime.
Miceli led the offensive onslaught for the Cougars with a game-high 27 points that included five three-pointers. Shannon followed with 24 points, with 21 of those coming from behind the three-point arc. Charleroi wasn’t all three-point shooting as Arnold was a force inside, scoring 22 points, including 18 in the first half.
Ron Howard led Waynesburg (7-5, 11-8) with 16 points. Darton McIntire finished with 14 points and Rob Miller had 13. The Raiders played without forward Mitch Warman.
The teams combined to make 25 three-pointers.
Peters Township 73, South Park 47: Peters Township closed the regular season with a 73-47 victory over host South Park in a non-section game.
Peters Township (14-8) used balanced scoring and three strong defensive quarters to beat the Eagles. PT led 22-18 after one quarter before holding South Park (8-12) to 17 points over the next two quarters and forging a 62-35 lead.
Nick Valentic led PT with 13 points. Kelson Marisa scored all of his 12 points from behind the three-point line. Half of the Indians’ 26 field goals were three-pointers.
South Park’s Joey Torris scored a game-high 17 points.
Girls results
Trinity 65, West Greene 21: Mary Dunn scored 18 points and Trinity jumped out to a 21-0 first quarter lead en route to a 65-21 non-section win over West Greene in a high school girls basketball game between a pair of teams tuning up for the playoffs.
Abby O’Connor added 13 points and Sierra Kotchman had 11 for the Hillers (17-3), the second-place team in Section 5-AAA.
Makenna Lampe had seven points to lead West Greene (16-6), the third-place team from Section 3-A.
Cornell 55, Ringgold 51: Daeja Quick had 23 points as Cornell held off Ringgold in a non-section game, 55-51.
Dominique Richards added 18 points and Nysia Miles scored 10 for Cornell (16-5).
Ahsley Briscoe led Ringgold (12-9) with 15 points, while Taylor Mendicino had 12 points in the losing effort.
Sto-Rox 46, Fort Cherry 21: Janaya Hazlip scored 18 points and Sto-Roc outscored Fort Cherry, 17-5, in the third quarter en route to a 17-5 non-section win over the Rangers.
Lexi Frazee added 16 points for Sto-Rox (11-11), which led 21-10 at the half.
Hannah Greene scored 11 points for the Rangers (9-13).
