Derry tops C-H; BV to semifinals

Derry used seven pins in a combined 8:15 Wednesday night to defeat visiting Chartiers-Houston.

The Trojans will face Freedom in the semifinals Saturday at Chartiers-Houston and the winner will face either Burrell or South Fayette for the WPIAL title at 2 p.m.

The Bucs advanced the quarterfinals with a 48-21 win over Indiana. The Bucs received pins by Ty Mazutis (106), RJ Hall (160), Dom Provenzano (182), TJ Johnston (220) and Trey Lober (heavyweight).

The tables were turned in the quarterfinals. Derry won the first three bouts, including two pins and a technical fall, and finished with three consecutive pins to earn a shot to compete for the program’s first WPIAL team title.

Mazutis and Lober had pins in the quarterfinals for C-H.

Belle Vernon to semifinals: Top-seeded Belle Vernon had no trouble advancing to the Class AAA semifinals. The Leopards crushed Greensburg Salem 66-6 and Seneva Valley 57-9 in the first two rounds on the Leopards’ mats.

Belle Vernon will face North Allegheny in the semifinals Saturday at Penn Hills. North Allegheny upset fourth-seeded Franklin Regional in the quarterfinals.

Beth-Center wins one, loses one: Beth-Center crushed South Allegheny, 55-15, in the opening round of the Class AA tournament at Freedom before being eliminated by the host school, 46-24, in the quarterfinals.
