The Washington County commissioners on Thursday approved a $93,040 contract with GAI Consulting Engineers to inspect the construction of the Mawhinney Road bridge over Millers Run, Cecil Township.

Eighty percent of the cost will be borne by federal tax dollars, while state taxpayers will be responsible for 15 percent and the county, 5 percent.

The county is seeking proposals from qualified engineering firms to design and receive permits for a group of three bridges to be announced later. The abutments will remain, but the spans will be replaced.

Lisa Cessna, director of the county planning commission, said her department will also be seeking bids for mowing and clearing brush, debris and trees from stream banks within its 10 miles of flood-control projects.
