A $37,500 grant from the state Department of Community and Economic Development will assist five Mon Valley municipalities in developing a shared comprehensive plan.

“The grant to the Washington County Redevelopment Authority will help Charleroi, North Charleroi, Speers and Twilight boroughs and Fallowfield Township work cooperatively to tackle shared problems such as deteriorating infrastructure, aging and decreasing populations and blight,” said state Rep. Peter Daley, D-California. “The comprehensive plan for the Mon Valley communities will target persistent issues in a cost-effective manner via the grant.”

Daley said DCED noted in its grant approval that the county redevelopment authority has a proven record in cooperative planning ventures, citing the Charleroi Regional Police Department, which serves Charleroi, North Charleroi, Speers and Twilight boroughs.

The DCED’s Municipal Assistance Program community planning grant provides up to half of eligible costs for community and economic development improvements, with an emphasis on multimunicipal projects.
