Garden symposium at Hillman Center
The 21st annual Garden & Landscape Symposium of Western Pennsylvania, presented by Penn State Extension and Shady Side Academy, will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 23 at the Hillman Center for the Performing Arts in Fox Chapel.
Keynote speakers will be Thomas Rainer and Claudia West, co-authors of “Planting in a Post-Wild World,” a book that encourages the dynamics of aesthetics with the responsibility of ecology.
Rainer, a registered landscape architect, teacher and writer from Arlington, Va., will speak about “Creative Approaches to Site Preparation, Installation and Maintenance.” West, ecological sales manager at North Creek Nurseries in Landenberg, will present “Successful Rain Gardens Inspired by Native Plants.”
Other speakers include Kelly Norris, an award-winning author from Iowa and the first director of horticulture at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden, who will discuss “Plants with Style,” and Laura Deeter, professor at Ohio State University at Wooster, who will present “Continual Color without Continual Hassle.”
The symposium includes breakfast and lunch and plenty of time to shop at the Garden Markeplace, which will feature hard-to-find perennials, annuals, shrubs, natives, terrariums, garden accessories, botanical artwork, clothing and accessories.
Fee is $105 before March 25, and $120 thereafter. To register, visit http://extension.psu.edu/garden-landscape-symposium or call 412-482-3465.
