Cal men drop Lock Haven, clinch PSAC tourney berth

California University clinched a berth in the PSAC tournament with a 79-65 victory over host Lock Haven Saturday afternoon.
California is 9-10 in the West Division and 10-13 overall. Lock Haven falls to 3-16, 5-17.
California made 11 of 17 shots from three-point range and received a career-high 26 points from Quentin Harding. It was the second time in four games that Harding has established his career high for points.
Chris Williams and Jake Jacubec each scored 13 points, shooting a combined 10-for-11 from the field. Williams also had a team-high seven rebounds.
Cal used an 11-2 run in the first half to open a 26-11 lead. A 10-3 spurt by the Vulcans pushed the lead to 59-36 with 12 minutes remaining and the Bald Eagles never threatened again.
Wali Hepbrun paced Lock Haven with 19 points and six assists.
Bethany 74, Wash & Jeff 63: Reece Mabery scored a game-high 25 points, and Bethany forced 21 Washington & Jefferson turnovers, as the Bison defeated the Presidents 74-63 in a PAC game at Henry Memorial Center.
Bethany (10-6, 16-9) scored 21 points off W&J turnovers.
W&J (6-10, 8-17) will play at Bethany Tuesday (7 p.m.) in the first round of the PAC tournament.
The Presidents dominated play early, jumping out to a 20-9. However, the Presidents were held without a field goal for the next 10 minutes and scored only eight points over the remainder of the half. Bethany forced a 28-28 tie at halftime, then opened the second half with a 22-13 run to open a 50-41 lead with 12 minutes left.
W&J chipped away at the deficit and closed to within three points twice in the final six minutes, but the Bison secured the win at the free-throw line over the closing minutes.
Zach Bellhy (Fort Cherry) scored 22 points and moved into fourth place on the W&J’s career scoring with 1,472 points. Nate Bellhy (Fort Cherry) had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Mitch Locher had 11 points.
Leslie Addy scored 14 points for Bethany, and Nick Wilcox (Peters Township) had 13 points, a game-high 13 rebounds and five assists.
Women’s results
Wash & Jeff 81, Bethany 66: Junior forward Chelsea Apke and sophomore center Valerie Dunlap each scored 24 points to lead Washington & Jefferson to an 81-66 victory over Bethany in the Presidents’ regular-season home finale Saturday at the Henry Memorial Center.
Apke shot 10-of-13 from the field and made all four of her free throws, and Dunlap was 10-of-18 shooting and added six rebounds. Apke also contributed nine bounds, five assists, two steals and a pair of blocked shots. Dunlap blocked one shot and set the W&J single-season record with 66.
Senior guard Emily Abraham had 12 points for the Presidents (13-5, PAC, 18-7), who shot 52 percent.
W&J broke the game open with a 9-0 run for 37-27 lead. Dunlap scored the Presidents’ first nine points of the second half, but Bethany kept pace, eventually cutting W&J’s lead to 63-56.
W&J, however, responded by scoring 14 of the game’s next 16 points to take a commanding 77-58 lead that sent the Presidents to their eighth home victory of the season.
Taylor Verrico had 21 points for Bethany (5-13, 7-18).
W&J will host Grove City Tuesday night in the first round of the PAC tournament.
California 79, Lock Haven 62: Senior guard Stephanie Michael scored 24 points and tied her career-high with six three-pointers as California defeated host Lock Haven 79-62 in a PSAC West Division game.
The Vulcans (12-7, 16-7) have won 21 consecutive games against Lock Haven (4-15, 7-16).
Ashley Hines scored 15 points for Cal in her second start of the season. Emma Mahady had 12 points and nine rebounds.
Lock Haven was led by Sami Lane, who scored a game-high 27 points.
Waynesburg 77, Chatham 40: Gina Rievel scored 13 points and Brittany Spencer had her fifth double-double of the year as Waynesburg closed the regular season with a 77-40 victory over visiting Chatham in a PAC game.
Waynesburg (12-6, 13-12) will host Westminster Tuesday night in the first round of the PAC tournament.
The Yellow Jackets, who had a 20-2 first-half run and led 40-16 at halftime, received 11 points from Lauren Blair and 10 from Spencer, who also had 11 rebounds.
Emily Schmidt (Ringgold) led Chatham (2-16, 3-22) with 11 points and Rachel McClain scored 10.
