Baseball: Charleroi blanks Chartiers-Houston, tightens 2-AA race
Winning pitcher Emery Anden and reliever Josiah Fisher combined on an eight-hit shutout, Sam Pager scored the game’s only runs and third-place Charleroi defeated second-place Chartiers-Houston 2-0 in a Section 2-AA game Saturday afternoon.
Charleroi (4-2, 7-3) scored single runs in the third and fifth innings to win their fourth in a row.
Dan Miceli had a run-scoring single in the third inning and Pager scored on a double steal in the fifth.
Anden pitched six innings, allowing eight C-H singles but he did not issue a walk and struck out three. Fisher got the final three outs for a save.
Ryan Mele pitched well for C-H (6-2, 9-3), striking out four and walking one in a complete game. Matt Whitfield was 3-for-3 and T.J. Johnston had two singles for the Bucs. Chartiers-Houston had its three-game winning streak end.
• Chartiers Valley defeated Trinity 10-0 in the completion of a Section 3-AAA game suspended because of rain Friday.
The win moves Chartiers Valley (5-1, 10-3) into a first-place tie with Montour. The Colts scored five runs in the first inning and four in the fourth.
Trinity (1-5, 4-8) had three hits, including two by losing pitcher Kyle Kelley.
• Ian Logue threw a two-hit shutout as Thomas Jefferson defeated Ringgold 4-0 in Section 4-AAA.
TJ (4-5, 6-9) broke up a scoreless pitchers’ duel by pushing across two runs in the fifth inning and tacking on two more in the sixth.
Losing pitcher Ryan Varley and reliever Zack Brczynski combined on a six-hitter for Ringgold (2-7, 3-10). Brczynski hit a double.
