Softball: Jefferson-Morgan gets first win

Defending WPIAL champion Jefferson-Morgan went to extra innings but earned its first win of the season Friday.

The Rockets used an RBI-single by Brooke Diamond in the top of the eighth inning to defeat Ballard Memorial (Ky.) 3-2 at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Ballard Memorial (0-11) forced extra innings by scoring in the bottom of the seventh.

Winning pitcher Camryn Dugan allowed only four hits and struck out three for Jefferson-Morgan (1-3). Nikki Venick and Maddie Van Givner each had a triple for the Rockets, who had nine hits.

• Brownsville used a three-run seventh inning to pull away for a 9-4 win over Waynesburg in Section 2-AA.

Tiffany Markovitch struck out six and drove in two runs for the Falcons (3-1, 4-3). Tiffany Ross hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning for the Raiders (1-2, 1-5).
