Commissioners review costs to repair courthouse porch
WAYNESBURG – Greene County commissioners are expected to award a contract today to repair the front porch at the courthouse, where stone slabs have become uneven and present a tripping hazard.
At a brief agenda meeting Wednesday morning, the commissioners agreed to place on the agenda for today’s meeting the awarding of a contract for the repairs.
The county received three quotes for the work. The low quote of $19,400 was submitted by Jesse Fiske LLC, whose company also completed repairs and improvements to the courthouse dome and statue three years ago.
Over the years, the county has had problems with the stone slabs, which become uneven with the winter freeze and thaw cycle, Chief Clerk Jeffrey Marshall said.
This past winter, barricades were used to block access to the porch on either side of the main courthouse entrance because the stones had become so bad.
The porch is about 57 feet long and 11 feet wide. The existing stone slabs now sit on a sand base. As part of the project, the sand will be removed and a concrete base constructed, Marshall said.
New stone slabs, identified as two-inch, Pennsylvania Blue Stone Paver slabs, will then be grouted to the concrete base.
The work is expected to be completed this summer. The county will use Act 13 impact fee money to pay for the project. The county replaced the steps at the front of the courthouse about six years ago.
In other business, the commissioners also agreed to place on the agenda for today a proposal by Pennoni Engineering for $69,500 to complete engineering and design work for a segment of the access road and a parking lot at the county airport.
The work is part of the plan to open up airport property fronting Route 21 to commercial development.
In February, the commissioners awarded a contract to construct a new intersection on Route 21 at the airport, realigning the airport entrance road with Murtha Drive.
Pennoni will complete the engineering and design work for a section of road within the airport property from the new intersection to an area east of the administration building where the new parking lot will be built.
Construction on the new Route 21 intersection is expected to begin next month, Marshall said. The final phase of the project will include construction of a road inside the airport property west to the three, two-acre parcels that will be available for commercial development.
The commissioners also agreed to place on the agenda a proposal from Widmer Engineering to complete design work for the replacement of a small county bridge over Hart’s Run in Aleppo Township. The bridge, County Bridge No. 102, will be replaced by the county using liquid fuels money.
