Softball: Rush’s two home runs lift Canon-Mac to win
Linda Rush had three hits, including two home runs, and drove in five runs as Canon-McMillan cruised to a 15-0 three-inning Section 4-AAAA win over Carrick.
Rush went 3-for-3 with two runs, including a three-run double and a solo homer in the second inning for the Big Macs (4-0, 6-1), who got two hits and two RBI from Kayla Hopkins. Abbi Michelluci earned the win with three strikeouts and Carrick (1-3, 2-3) just one hit.
• Madison Lampe hit the go-ahead grand slam in the sixth inning and Madison Renner struckout eight as West Greene pulled away for a 14-5 win over Keystone Oaks in a non-section game on the road.
Bailey Bennington hit two runs and drove in three, while Kaitlyn Rizor went 4-for-5 with a home run and three RBI for the Pioneers (9-1), who had 13 hits. Molly Allward hit a home run for Keystone Oaks (2-8).
• Bentworth scored two unearned runs and Casey Hite pitched the Bearcats to a 2-1 win over Brownsville in a Section 2-AA game.
Hite had four strikeouts and Aubrey Yates had a double for Bentworth (2-0, 5-1), which scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning on a throwing error. Tiffany Markovitch had nine strikeouts for the Falcons (3-2, 4-4).
• Ashley Smith drove in three runs and earned the win with four strikeouts to help Charleroi defeat Beth-Center 13-3 in a six-inning Section 2-AA game.
Kaitlyn McCann, Katie Reed and Smith, who had a triple, had multi-hit games for the Cougars (2-2, 3-2). Abby Gustovich went 2-for-3 and had five strikeouts for the Bulldogs (0-4, 0-4).
• Tori Cooper had two doubles and drove in three runs to help Monessen defeat Mapletown 8-1 in a non-section game.
Shelby Minerd hit a solo home run for Monessen (6-2). Dana Vatakis struck out 15 and walked two.
Mapletown (1-5) managed one hit.
• Jefferson-Morgan pitching allowed only one hit over 10 innings as the Rockets swept Avella, 11-0 and 11-1, in Section 1-A.
In the first game, Camryn Dugan and Autumn Tedrow combined for a no-hitter. Tedrow struck out eight in three innings. Nikki Venick went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI. Morgan Simkovic hit a two-run home run and Krista McCartney knocked in two runs.
In the second game, Tedrow struck out eight and walked two for the Rockets (2-0, 4-3). Venick and Simkovic each homered and drove in three runs. Maddie VanDivner and Anna Mattish each drove in two runs.
Avella fell to 0-4, 0-3 in the section.
• Tara Staley tripled and scored four runs to help Waynesburg outslug Washington, 19-10, in a Section 2-AA game.
Emma Ricciuti struck out 10 and Tiffany Ross scored four times for the Raiders (2-2, 2-5). Alexas Strawn doubled and knocked in four runs and Haylea Ellis scored three times for Wash High (0-4, 0-5). Kieana Randolph doubled.
• Lindsey Kalup homered and drove in three runs to power Thomas Jefferson to an 8-4 victory over Trinity in a Section 3-AA game.
Lacey Lautner doubled and had three RBI and Emily Scheidter and Haleigh Karch each had a double for TJ (2-0, 5-1).
Bailey Bell hit a three-run home run and Delaney Elling and Sara Beecham each had a double for the Hillers (0-3, 1-6).
• In other games, South Fayette defeated Keystone Oaks 11-0 and California fell to Greensburg Central Catholic, 13-9. No other information was made available to the Observer-Reporter.
• Bailey Parshall hit two home runs and had nine strikeouts as Belle Vernon defeated West Mifflin 5-0 in a Section 3-AAA game on the road Tuesday.
Parshall drove in four runs on three hits and allowed just three hits in the complete-game win for the Leopards, who took advantage of three errors by the Titans (1-3, 5-4).
• Chartiers-Houston only needed five hits to score 16 runs in a 16-0 three-inning win over Avella in Section 1-A Tuesday.
Brittany Blumen drove in four runs while Macie Kesneck, Kayla Alderson and Allison Smith all drove in two for the Bucs (2-1, 3-3). Kaitlyn Dittrich had seven strikeouts and only had one hit. Avella committed six errors.
