Baseball: Rohaley strikes out 11 in Big Macs’ win

Sophomore Zach Rohaley tossed a complete game shutout with 11 strikeouts as Canon-McMillan defeated Baldwin 6-0 Wednesday in Section 5-AAAA.

Rohaley, who struck out 16 in a win over Mt. Lebanon last week, walked two and allowed only two hits. Cam Walker and Jordan Castelli combined for seven of the Big Macs’ eight hits. Walker was 4-for-4 with three runs and Castelli 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs for Canon-McMillan (5-4, 9-6), which is one game behind third-place Peters Township. Sean Kealey took the loss for Baldwin (4-6, 5-8).

• Trinity hurt South Fayette’s playoff chances by defeating the host Lions 7-6 in Section 3-AAA.

Blake Rohrbacher hit a solo home run and winning pitcher Kyle Kelley threw a complete game as the Hillers improved to 2-6 in section and 5-9 overall. It was the Hillers’ second one-run game in less than 24 hours.

The loss dropped South Fayette to 4-4 in the section and 6-8 overall. The Lions trail West Allegheny one game for the final playoff spot.

Trinity’s Garrett Briant and Nick Herrnberger each had a double for Trinity and Evan McDaniel drove in two runs. South Fayette hit four doubles but left 10 runners on base.

• Hunter Neely’s two-run single to right centerfield in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Bentworth a 3-2 victory over Jefferson-Morgan in Section 1-A.

The win keeps Bentworth (7-1, 9-3) tied with California for the section lead.

The game was a pitcher’s duel between Bentworth’s Ty Mitchell, who threw a five-hitter and needed only 78 pitches for the complete game. J-M’s Gage Clark had a six-hitter and threw 83 pitches.

The Rockets (2-5, 5-7) took a 2-1 lead into the seventh but Bentworth’s Clint Wintersay and Nick Silver hit singles and Mitchell walked to load the bases, setting up Nelly’s game-winner.

Zach Shaffer had a two-run double for J-M.

• Cam Hanley’s two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning capped Chartiers-Houston’s four-run inning as the Bucs rallied for a 4-3 victory over Beth-Center in Section 2-AA.

Beth-Center (4-5, 4-6), which had two hits and two runs from Eddie Zellie, led 3-0 in the sixth. Chartiers-Houston (7-2, 10-3), which stayed in the section title hunt, pulled to within 3-2 when Ryan Mele hit a run-scoring triple and Destin Wesier followed with a single.

Winning pitcher Zach Southern struck out seven.

• Avella moved closer to securing a playoff berth out of Section 5-A by getting a complete-game from senior pitcher Tyler Fraysier and breaking a tie by scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Brentwood, 4-2.

A bases-loaded fielder’s choice grounder by Dylan Markle broke the 2-2 tie and James Taylor’s walk on a 3-2 pitch forced in an insurance run for Avella (5-9 overall), which is 4-4 in the section and in third place.

Fraysier scattered seven hits and struck out five. Cody Dobbin doubled for the Eagles.

Brentwood is in second place at 5-3, 8-3.

• California won its fourth straight and kept pace with Bentworth atop Section 1-A with a 13-1 five-inning win over West Greene.

Alex Adams was 3-for-3 and drove in three runs and Johnny DeFranco tripled with two RBI. Winning pitcher Nathaniel Luketich improved his record to 4-0.

California is 8-1 in section and 13-2 overall. West Greene is 3-5, 4-7.

• Seton-La Salle used a pair of three-run innings to rally and defeat Washington 9-6 in a non-section game at the Brookline Community Center.

Washington (3-8) forged a 4-0 lead in the third inning, but the Rebels scored three times in the third, three more in the fifth and two in the sixth.

Jimmy Wheeler led Seton-La Salle at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Nick Krugh had two doubles.

Wash High had 12 hits, including a double and a single by Jackson Interval. Kevin Patterson doubled and Nate Swart doubled and drove in two runs.

• Nick Mundell pitched a three-inning no-hitter, Nathan Broadwater drove in three runs and host Carmichaels rolled over Mapletown 15-0 in Section 1-A.

Mundell struck out five and walked only one for the Mikes (4-4, 8-5). Broadwater, Jacob Wamsley, Cody Brown and Mike Ludrosky each hit a double. Joel Spishock drove in two runs.

• Winning pitcher Cameron Duffett and reliever Jimmy Martin combined on a shutout and West Allegheny did all its scoring in the third inning for a 3-0 victory over McGuffey in Section 3-AAA.

Chasen Claus had a two-run doubled in a three-run third for WA (5-3, 11-3). Duffett pitched 6 1/3 shutout innings but McGuffey (1-7, 3-9) put two runners on base in the seventh inning. The Indians brought in Martin to pitch and he got the final two outs.

McGuffey outhit West Allegheny 7-6. Dan Orr had a triple and Matt Nobak doubled for the Highlanders.

• Josiah Fisher pitched a five-hit shutout and Sam Miceli drove in two runs as Charleroi defeated Waynesburg 6-0 in Section 2-AA.

Fisher struck out 12 and Charleroi (5-3, 8-4) scored five runs over the first two innings.

Waynesburg (4-6) made four errors that led to two unearned runs. Trey Rohanna doubled for the Raiders.

• New Brighton had 14 hits and took advantage of nine errors by Fort Cherry to beat the visiting Rangers 11-1 in Section 1-AA.

Drew Mittner was 3-for-4 and Justyn Francona was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI to back the pitching of Kyle Bolland, who threw a three-hitter.

Two of Fort Cherry’s hits went for extra bases as Hunter Douglas and Cameron Schaub each doubled.

New Brighton is 8-3 in section (8-5 overall) and FC is 3-7 (6-8).

• Zach Uhazie threw an eight-hit shutout and struck out 14 batters to lead Laurel Highlands to a 5-0 win at Belle Vernon in Section 4-AAA.

The Mustangs (11-0, 14-1) clinched the section title. Dom Peroni hit a home run for LH.

Belle Vernon is 7-4, 11-4. The Leopards left nine runners on base.
