Baseball: W&J holds off Mount Union; Waynesburg falls to UPG

Washington & Jefferson extended its winning streak to eight with an 8-5 victory over Mount Union in a non-conference game Wednesday in Alliance, Ohio.

W&J (22-14) scored seven runs over the fourth and fifth innings, then had to hold off a late rally by Mount Union (18-18). The Presidents led 8-2 in the bottom of the eighth before the Raiders scored the game’s final three runs.

Nick Vento drove in three runs, Frank Fortunato tripled and Mark Merlino doubled and had two RBI to lead W&J’s 12-hit attack.

Garrett Harstine, the second of five W&J pitchers, was credited with the win. Derek Helbing got the final out for his sixth save of the season.

• Chartiers-Houston graduate Dylan Pounds had three hits, scored three runs and drove in three as Pitt-Greensburg outlasted Waynesburg, 12-9, in a non-conference game.

Pounds doubled and tripled, while Ryan Dodson homered for UPG (22-16), driving in four runs.

Tyler Rubasky homered, and Tyler Reis tripled and drove in three runs, for Waynesburg (14-22).
