Route 21 realignment project to start
WAYNESBURG – Work is expected to begin this week on the construction project to reconfigure the Route 21 intersection with Murtha Drive at the Greene County Airport, although weather could delay those plans.
Portable electronic signs that were stationed in both directions of Route 21 earlier this month announced that work was set to begin Monday, although county Chief Clerk Jeff Marshall expected construction to begin Wednesday at the earliest if the weather cooperates.
The intersection will realign the airport entrance road with Murtha Drive and make a new four-way intersection at Route 21.
The project is designed to make the entrance to the airport property easier for motorists and hopefully spur commercial development on several open parcels in the area.
The county commissioners May 5 awarded a contract to A. Folino Construction Inc. for $768,719 to build the new intersection.
Marshall said the state Department of Transportation has approved a plan to keep traffic moving through the intersection during construction.
“There won’t be any closures of lanes, but there are times when they may be transferring traffic from one side to the other,” Marshall said. “There could be lane restrictions.”
The work must be completed within six months per the terms of the contract, Marshall said.
