Pageant slated for Sunday

CARMICHAELS – Thirteen contestants will compete in the 23rd Annual Miss Greene County pageant at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Stanley Ferek III Auditorium of Carmichaels Area High School.

This year’s theme is “These Boots Are Made for Walking.”

Sponsored by Consol Energy Inc. and the Greene County commissioners and presented by the county Department of Recreation, the pageant is open to Greene County girls ages 2 to 17.

The age categories are as follows: Tiny Miss, 2 to 4 years; Petite Miss, 5 to 7 years; Junior Miss, 8 to 11 years; Young Miss, 12 to 14 years; and Teen Miss, 15 to 17 years.

Age categories are determined by the age of the contestant on the day of the pageant. A queen and a first runner-up will be awarded in each age category.

During the pageant, each contestant will be judged on her photo and modeling of sportswear and formal wear. All age categories except Tiny Miss are required to perform a talent routine, and Young Miss and Teen Miss contestants also will be judged on interviews conducted prior to the pageant. All contestants are eligible for the Director’s Award, which will be presented to the contestant who sells the most in advertising sponsorships. The value of the award is worth up to $500.

Pageant rehearsal will be held Saturday in the high school auditorium and is mandatory for all contestants. Tiny Miss and Petite Miss Contestants must arrive by 9 a.m., and Junior Miss, Young Miss and Teen Miss Contestants must arrive by 10 a.m. On the day of the pageant, Young Miss and Teen Miss Contestants must be present by noon, and all other contestants must be present by 12:45 p.m. Doors open to the public at 1 p.m. Admission to the pageant is $5. Available for sale are “Good Luck” roses for $5 each and a pageant booklet showcasing all the contestants at a cost of $15.

The reigning Miss Greene County queens are Tiny Miss Bailey Barnyak of Carmichaels; Petite Miss Alexa Smith of Carmichaels; Junior Miss Macey Whipkey of West Finley; Young Miss Caitlyn Ricco of Carmichaels; and Teen Miss Floretta Chambers of Carmichaels.

Each of the five queens received a trophy, crown, sash, bouquet and a cash award. Whipkey won the 2012 Director’s Award and received a trophy and a cash award.

In addition to Consol and the commissioners, the pageant receives support froms Alpha Natural Resources, Community Bank, Direct Results, Energy Corporation of America, Hartman and Hartman, McCracken Pharmacy, State Rep. Pam Snyder and Wal-Mart.
