South Fayette stops Central Valley in opener

McDONALD – Thayer Phillips, a defensive tackle, returned a fumble 21 yards for his first varsity touchdown to help South Fayette knock off Central Valley, 28-17, in a non-conference high school football opener for both teams Friday night.

South Fayette (1-0) was leading 14-10 with 10:08 left in the third quarter when Phillips scored. Drew Saxton found Noach Plack for a 38-yard touchdown nine minutes later to make it 28-10

Central Valley (0-1) scored with 5:07 remaining when Anthony Mendilino caught a 31-yard toss from Curtis Latshaw.

Geovanie Love, who gained 54 yards on 16 carries, scored on runs of 5 and 1 yards to give South Fayette a 14-10 halftime lead.

Saxton completed 18 of 22 passes for 259 yards and a TD. Plack had 7 receptions for 105 yards and a score. Dan Trimbur caught 5 passes for 96 yards and kicked four extra points.

Dan Santia rushed for 11 yards on 19 carries for CV.
