Two Cross Creek Township families were displaced when a fire early Saturday heavily damaged their duplex.

Avella fire Chief Eric Temple said the call came in about 1:45 a.m. for the blaze at 469-A Cross Creek Road. He said the back of the structure was burning when fire crews arrived on the scene.

“They did a heck of a job knocking it down,” Temple said.

The house had been converted into two apartments. Crews were on the scene until about 5:30 a.m. Temple said a fire marshal is investigating the cause, but it did not appear to be suspicious.

There were no injuries, Temple said. Assisting were firefighters from Slovan, West Middletown and Jefferson. Canton Township brought an air truck, and Washington County’s Department of Public Safety provided a cooling tent for firefighters. Firefighters from Franklin, W.Va., were on standby.

Temple said the residents, whose names were not available, were staying with family members.
