Teflon Don: Trump held to no standards

When is enough enough with Donald Trump? What denigrating, snarling epithet from him would it take for his supporters, or those who remain on the fence, to come to the conclusion that they simply can’t vote to put a person like that in the White House? The Republican presidential nominee once said that he could shoot someone on the street, and it wouldn’t put a dent in his support. We’re beginning to think he was right.

The most recent Trump comment that should give a rational person pause was his remark in an ABC News interview that Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton doesn’t have “a presidential look.”

One can only suspect that Trump, who has a long history of objectifying women and making repugnant statements about them, means that Clinton doesn’t appear presidential because she’s a female who isn’t blessed with supermodel looks.

This is the same man, of course, who said of Carly Fiorina, his onetime opponent for the GOP nomination, “Look at that face. Would anyone vote for that? Can you imagine that, the face of our next president?”

Sadly, a candidate’s physical appearance can be a factor in how they are perceived by voters, but when it comes to Trump, should a person whose hair and spray-tan skin tone have led some to compare him to an Oompa Loompa really be mocking anyone else?

As is his modus operandi – make a statement that is clearly understood by the masses, then lie about it later – Trump backtracked and claimed he was referring to Clinton’s persona, rather than her appearance.

Clinton was having none of it, saying, “Women all over this country heard very clearly what Mr. Trump said.”

The pro-abortion-rights group EMILY’s List doubled down, sending supporters an email that said, “You don’t have to look too far to see … Donald Trump has been judging women’s looks for years, calling women ‘bimbos,’ ‘fat pigs,’ ‘dogs,’ ‘disgusting animals,’ ‘flat-chested’ and ‘no longer a 10.'”

After the first Republican candidates debate in August 2015, when Megyn Kelly of Fox News questioned Trump about accusations that he’s a sexist, Trump opined that she was tough on him because she was menstruating. Had a male Democratic candidate said that about a woman, his support among that party’s primary electorate would have evaporated faster than an ice cube in Death Valley. If Trump lost any support among GOP voters, it was negligible. And who knows, the way this election season is devolving, it might have gained him a few votes.

Other Trump lowlights:

• In response to Kelly’s question in the 2015 debate, Trump said he didn’t have time for “total political correctness.” Translation: He wants carte blanche to say whatever reprehensible thing that pops into his mind.

• His take on the epidemic of rape in the U.S. military: “What did these geniuses expect when they put men and women together?”

• He once called an opposition attorney in a civil action “disgusting” because she asked for a break to pump breast milk for her baby.

Since Donald Trump and his supporters seem to place great value on “straight talk” and “telling it like it is,” we won’t mince words. Donald Trump is an arrogant, vacuous, hateful, serial-lying blowhard. You wouldn’t want him to be your next-door neighbor. As president? Surely we haven’t sunk that low.
