Fire damages three-story apartment building in Charleroi
An early-morning fire Saturday caused heavy damage to a three-story apartment building in Charleroi, leaving three tenants homeless and sending one person to the hospital with smoke inhalation.
Charleroi fire Chief Robert Whiten Jr. said his department was called to 803 Fallowfield Ave. about 3 a.m. and found a bedroom on the third floor on fire.
Firefighters were able to get the woman out of the apartment and she was taken to Mon Valley Hospital in Carroll Township for overnight observation from smoke inhalation, Whiten said. He did not know her age or identity.
Whiten said the state police fire marshal spoke to the woman at the scene and determined the cause of the fire was accidental from her smoking in bed. The third floor apartment’s bedroom and bathroom sustained heavy damage, Whiten said.
The other two units below sustained water and smoke damage, he said.
Charleroi firefighters were assisted by departments from Lock 4, Fallowfield, Stockdale, Roscoe and Monessen. Crews were on scene for about 90 minutes
