Sister Sue Fazzini and Sister Audrey Quinn got free tickets to Sunday’s Pittsburgh Steelers game, but they didn’t just go to watch a football game.

The two women from Greene County were honored during the game after being dubbed community champions.

The Steelers, in partnership with PNC Bank, honor Community Champions at every home game, and Sunday the Ruff Creek women were recipients of the award.

“It was for everything that we do,” Fazzini said. “They sent us tickets and we were off to the game.”

Quinn and Fazzini are members of the Benedictine Sisters of Pittsburgh and have been doing charity work in Greene County for decades, including their Heart ‘n Sole program that collects about 400 new pairs of shoes for school children across the county.

“We’re the conduit,” Fazzini said. “Some people will donate the money and some call with a need.”

She said the Steelers also made a donation of $2,500 to the ministries that Quinn and Fazzini work with year round.

“Finding out there was a donation is also a huge honor,” Fazzini said. “It will be used for whatever needs arise–if it’s shoes, or sometimes people need help with gas money or rent. We always know that we’ll be led in the direction that the money needs to be used.”

Fazzini said she’s been a Steelers fan since she was a child, making the experience of going to the game and meeting legendary Steelers players like Mike Wagner surreal.

“I remember before the games weren’t selling out and they wouldn’t be on TV, the whole family would listen to the game on the radio,” she said.
