Vacant seat attracts 7 candidates
Washington School Board met Monday to discuss filling its vacant seat.
Seven candidates applied for the volunteer position, including three who graduated from Washington High School.
The position became open following the resignation of director Linda Clemons, who served on the board for 13 years.
The person who is appointed will serve until Dec. 31, 2017.
To continue beyond that date, that person will have to run for a four-year term in the May election.
The school board said Clemons’ service to the district and its students, her work ethic and dedication were “exemplary.”
“Her biggest concern, and what was most important to her, was that all students, black and white, would get a great education at Washington School District,” said director Marsha Pleta, who was elected to the school board at the same time as Clemons. “Education was her primary concern. She put in a lot of time. Prexie Pride was very important to her. She was a person of very high character, and whatever she believed in, she fought for it. I’m going to miss her so much.”
Clemons was honored for her efforts at a recent football game.
A vote to select a candidate is set for the Nov. 7 meeting.
