PITTSBURGH – Police say a 22-year-old man shot a fellow worker at a Pennsylvania Walmart store because the other man was offended that he was changing genders to female, and allegedly threatened him.

Zachary McClimans told police he wanted to prevent the co-worker from hurting him and felt so strongly about it that rather than wait until after work, he went into the store and shot the co-worker. The victim is expected to survive.

McClimans remained jailed Friday on attempted homicide and other charges in the Thursday shooting in Hermitage, about 70 miles north of Pittsburgh. Court documents didn’t list an attorney for him.

McClimans told police he’s switching genders. It wasn’t immediately known if he has begun identifying as female.

Walmart officials said they are concerned and looking into the shooting.
