Fayette man charged with fatally shooting junior firefighter

A 21-year-old Fayette County man is charged with homicide for allegedly shooting a 16-year-old junior firefighter inside a fire station. State police said George A. Matis Jr., 21, of Republic, is charged with shooting the teenager at about 4 p.m. Sunday at the Republic Volunteer Fire Department.

Police said the 16-year-old, whose name has not been released, was struck in the face by the bullet and died at the scene. Matis, who is also a member of the fire department, is in Fayette County Jail pending a preliminary hearing.
